Audi A4 B7 White Black Headlight Housing

Black Headlights - B7 Audi S4I recently painted my inner headlight housings blackness (sometimes called the "Joey mod") and wanted to share some quick pictures and a DIY of how I did this mod. I decided to do this after seeing my friend Blake'southward RS4 with blacked out headlights and really liking how it looked on his car. Given there is very little chrome left on my car, I also felt the chrome headlights were starting to stick out too much and painting the headlights black might necktie everything together nicely. Overall I'grand very happy with it (despite some initial reservations) and think its a great way to brand the front end just a niggling more aggressive than information technology would be otherwise…

Above you tin see the before and after – I wasn't then sure if I liked it at first every bit information technology looked a trivial too aftermarket (dare I say ricey?), but at present that I've given information technology some time, I really dig information technology. In club to make it look a footling more OEM, I added back in my orange plough signal reflectors, which I think helped go along the wait ambitious without beingness over the top. In the moving-picture show above, I think you lot can see what I mean about the headlights sticking out too much when in the original chrome/argent cease, whereas beneath they blend in a petty nicer with the scarlet & white motif that I have throughout the car…

The bang-up matter about this mod is that it's very like shooting fish in a barrel to exercise, costs most nothing (the toll of ane tin can of spray paint and a small T8 torx screwdriver) and makes a huge deviation to the appearance of the auto. Best of all, if/when I get tired of it, it should be pretty like shooting fish in a barrel to reverse by taking the inner housing out and painting it silvery again. I may also experiment with a gunmetal color to see how that looks further down the road.

IMG_1409To do this modern, take off the headlights similar you would for the clear corner mod detailed in this post – in fact, I'd recommend doing all mods to your headlights at this fourth dimension – including LED DRLs, clear corner mod, new headlight bulbs, and any other changes to the bulbs or front-end advent mods yous take in mind. Pull the headlights apart by removing the 5 retaining clips and heating the glue (again, as described in the clear corner post above). Once the headlight is divide in two, at that place are iii screws holding in the inner housing pictured higher up – they are very small torx bits size eight, and you may need to pick up a special screwdriver to get them as most standard torx $.25 will be also big. A T8 torx screwdriver should be bachelor at any home improvement store (Home Depot, Ace, Lowes, etc.). Once the inner housing has been removed, requite information technology a low-cal sanding then paint information technology the color you want. Requite it a few coats and then allow it dry before screwing it back in and and then reinstall everything. Also exist certain not to go any fingerprints on the within of the headlight housing, because if yous practise information technology volition drive y'all basics (ask me how I know!). Give the inside a quick wipe down with a microfiber to make sure there is no dust or fingerprints that may exist distracting one time you put the headlights back together…

The other matter you may want to consider doing at this stage is a headlight restoration if your headlights are badly pitted or discolored on the outside. When the headlights are off the car, it's much easier to sand and buff them without worrying near scratching the paint (plus you lot can do it from the comfort of indoors). If you make up one's mind to do a headlight restoration kit, I like this one from Meguiars every bit it comes with sandpaper to really become out the pitting and imperfections you may take accumulated (the kits with simply polish don't really clean deep enough, IMO).

The only hard part is taking off the bumper and headlights, but information technology's fairly straightforward if you've done that role before. If y'all oasis't, y'all tin can also just practice one side at a time (without taking the bumper all of the way off, merely half off) so that y'all can keep everything lined upwardly nicely. If you accept the bumper all of the style off, just tighten the headlights back on nigh half way before putting the bumper dorsum on, and so tighten and adjust the headlights terminal to make certain everything lines up nicely, otherwise you lot'll stop up with some funky gaps between the headlights, grille and bottom of the hood.
IMG_5150That's all I have to say about the Joey mod/blacked out headlight mod – allow me know what you retrieve!
